We’re into year seven of streaming movies with FULLDOME OnDemand. We usually post an annual year-end review, but we missed 2020, so we’re picking up the tradition again.
From our start in 2015, with each successive year, we saw impressive growth numbers. By 2019’s end, we were renting shows at a regular 3-4 per day pace. And then — the coronavirus pandemic hit in spring 2020, and our customers’ theaters all shut down. Instead of renting 100+ shows per month, our monthly numbers actually dropped to 0, and then single-digit totals for another 8 months, slowly crawling back up. Even now, two years later, our volume is down 75% over pre-pandemic levels.
The good news: well, we’re still here!
Here’s our countdown tally of the most popular show titles for last year:
5. Molecularium Molecularium Project
4. HUBBLE Vision 2 Loch Ness Productions
3. Expedition Reef California Academy of Sciences
2. Moons: Worlds Of Mystery Museum of Science, Boston
1. Destination Solar System Adler Planetarium
Of course, some producers offer multiple show titles — and in the aggregate, their shows rack up some substantial counts:
5. Houston Museum of Natural Science – 15 rentals
4. Museum of Science, Boston – 26 rentals
3. California Academy of Sciences – 35 rentals
2. Adler Planetarium – 49 rentals
1. Loch Ness Productions – 54 rentals
Last year, 74 unique customers logged in to rent shows. 78% of the titles went to U.S. customers; 22% streamed internationally. Loch Ness Productions’ own shows made up 14% of the total.
FULLDOME OnDemand added 11 fulldome movies in 2020-21, six of those in languages other than English. And we introduced HD streaming for selected show packages, to be used in conventional flat-screen venues, such as classrooms and lecture halls.
